ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) was founded in 1965 in Warsaw, one year after the signature of the Venice Charter, the International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites.

ICOMOS is the international, non-governmental organization, the branch of UNESCO.
ICOMOS works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places and promotes the theory, methodology and scientific techniques applied to improving the preservation of cultural heritage, like: buildings, historic cities, archaeological sites or cultural landscapes. ICOMOS takes charge of entries on The World Heritage List and monitors polish cities,places and objects on The List.

The headquarter of the International Secretariat of ICOMOS is in Paris. ICOMOS brings together over 7500 members, and exists already in more than 130 countries.
The members are interdisciplinary experts: architects, historians, archaeologists, art historians, geographers, anthropologists, town planners and lawyers.


Polish National Committee ICOMOS brings together 140 the best polish experts work for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage. The purposes of PKN ICOMOS are: promotes polish attainments of preservation monuments, and improves international experiences of conservation in Poland.
Since the beginning in 1965 the presidents PKN ICOMOS were: prof. Stanis豉w Lorentz (1965-1981), prof. Krzysztof Paw這wski (1981-1984), prof. Olgierd Czerner (1984-1993) and prof. Krzysztof Paw這wski (1993-2002), prof. Andrzej Tomaszewski (since 2003).
